The Mandala Coloring Book (and a giveaway) - people, places and things

_mg_8798-copy

OOOHHHH! Another ETA - There are 2 Mandala Coloring Books now up for grabs. Sweet Carla has offered one from her. Yayyyy!!

ETA - I just read this before hitting publish and am giving you fair warning. This post really shows my southerness to a Tee. It twists and turns throughout. Going down many paths and totally veering away a couple of times from the initial intention of the story. But, if you are a southerner yourself, you will totally understand that all the additional facts and tidbits that are thrown in are completely important and can’t be left out. It. just. can’t. be. helped. And keep reading for the giveaway part………

If you have been a blog reader for a while, you may remember that I joined a group late last winter that followed the 12 weeks of The Artist’s Way book by Julia Cameron. I think I posted about it either on this blog or my old one, but I can’t find it. (Anyway, I highly recommend committing to an Artist’s Way group sometime, it isn’t only for people who call themselves artists.) So, part of our weekly group involved some hands on studio time. My favorite studio moment was learning about and making Mandalas. I found it relaxing and very meditative. As fate would have it, around the same time, I was shopping at one of my absolute favorite stores here in Atlanta, The Urban Cottage. (That delicious store could be it’s own people, places and things post.) While browsing at the UC, I spied one of the coolest creations ever! Yep. The whole point of this post, The Original Hand Illustrated Mandala Coloring Book by Carla Kaiser. You must go spend some time checking out Carla’s website, artwork, philosophy and blog. Stop by and tell her hi, she’s friendly like that. She has a sweet, fun and generous spirit. I admire how authentic and true she is. It really comes across within her writing and art work. Now’s the part where I rave about the Mandala coloring book. I’ll just do it in bullet point style…..

* What would you do with this book? Well, you color in it. It is perfect for spending some meditative time to yourself. It requires no thought except color choices and really frees up your creativity so you can go about your day. The mandalas themselves and the act of coloring are soothing and lovely. Not sure where to start at the beginning of your day? Head to your MCB. Feeling happy and peaceful? Spend some time coloring. Feeling like everything you are attempting is turning to crap? Whip out the coloring book. I love the scritch scratch sound my pencils make while coloring.

* These books would make a most wonderful and thoughtful gift for someone.

* This book would be a very lovely gift to yourself.

* I loved to color in coloring books when I was a kid. In fact, I was pretty excited when I had my own kids because I knew it would give me an excuse to be able to sit and color again. Except it turned out to be disappointing to have to dig around in their stubby broken crayon pile. And the idea of keeping my own fresh box seemed kind of childish, selfish and extravagant. So, I adore having this book with my own colored pencils. Markers would be great to use too. The pages are the perfect thickness for that.

* I love my book so much that I am going to give one away to one lucky reader. I could say it all Oprah like and go “YOU GET A MANDALA COLORING BOOOKKK!!!!!! Then the crowd goes insane. So, to be in the running, leave a comment below, in the comment section of this blog by midnight on Sunday February 21st. It’s totally ok if you are someone who has never commented and you just comment to be in the contest. I’ve done that before myself. I’ll contact the winner on Monday. Can’t wait to send one of these awesome books out to someone! If you’re too excited and want one immediately, head over to here to get yourself one. Have a great weekend!!!

February 19, 2010 - 10:58 am Wendy Beck - That rocks. You know how I love mandalas. That was my fav kind of stuff to color as a kid too. LOVE that blue one in your photo. I still have our lovely Christmas mandalas in my Christmas stuff!

February 19, 2010 - 2:51 pm Johnna - I am a southerner who is now turning yankee. I grew up in South Alabama, and I hope this doesn't hurt my chances of winning, but Carla Kaiser is a childhood and family friend. Our paths have not crossed in many, many years, but I keep up with her through her blogs. She is a very talented and gifted artist and you hit the nail on the head when you said…"She has a sweet, fun and generous spirit". I now call Maine home. Let me tell you a little secret…I am raising three southern gentlemen (ages 8, 5, 2), who will all one day, drive some yankee women wild! You can be assured that I am in great need of a little coloring therapy.

February 19, 2010 - 3:12 pm Denise Thomas - How fun! I would just LOVE to be in the drawing for the Mandala Coloring Book. It looks like something me and my seven year old son can do together (I am really sick of coloring batman!).

February 19, 2010 - 3:40 pm Jade Allen - I am a die-hard color addict :) I color at least two pages a night. This is such a fun and easy way to calm your stress and worries away from the work or school day. The designs remind me so much of the Indian culture and I would love to have this book! CHOOSE ME CHOOSE ME! :)

February 19, 2010 - 6:41 pm katie - carla's mandala designs are truly amazing - as is carla. if i don't win the contest, i will surely place an order for one anyway!

February 19, 2010 - 7:41 pm Katie - I don't need to be in the drawing, because I already have a copy of the Hand Illustrated Mandala Coloring Book, but I do want to thank you for showing the enthusiasm that this book deserves. I keep my copy at my desk at work for some "vacation" when stress levels get high. All the best to you and your readers!

February 19, 2010 - 10:51 pm Lyn Cook - Loved this article. I too have one of Ms. Kaisers coloring books that was given to me as a gift. I spend many hours in airports and planes and her coloring book has been my friend countless hours! It is as much fun to read her thoughts as it is comforting to color her designs!

February 23, 2010 - 11:07 am Cressida Rose - This is such a wonderful idea. I think I will order one as a gift for my sister who I always say is "creative from a distance". This will give her a new & beautiful way to express!
